Life and Credit : Look for Local Getaways

Look for Local Getaways

Everyone needs a break from the daily grind – just make sure it doesn't break your budget. Rising vacation costs may make you feel your household budget can't spare the cash. One answer is to go local and be creative. You'll probably find there are fascinating, relaxing destinations within 100 miles that you've never considered. Here are some practical suggestions from the experts at Credit Counselors:

Do your research. Talk to friends, look through the newspaper or area magazines, or check out the local Chamber of Commerce website to find suggestions for local vacations. Look at a map! Although many people think first of the big-name national parks, some state parks include inexpensive cabins. There's always camping and hiking, too. Or, choose one of your state's smaller cities where hotels will be cheaper.

Travel low-budget. Plan an economical getaway. A short trip should keep your gas costs down, but make sure you won't have to drive a lot once you get there. Consider train or bus travel. Choose a destination with plenty of things to do within walking distance, especially free or inexpensive things like museums and monuments.

Keep it short. Like a power nap, a long weekend away from home can be just as refreshing as a two-week vacation, and easier to arrange.

Travel smart. When booking a hotel, find out what the local taxes are. Many states and localities tack plenty of extra taxes on hotel rooms that will mostly be used by out-of-towners, and these can add as much as 15% to the bill. Ask about parking charges, too, and don't use the hotel phones! Finally, think twice about souvenirs, since most of them will end up forgotten in a box somewhere.

Hotel alternatives. If you're staying for a week or more, look into apartments or other kinds of lodging. They can often be cheaper than hotels, plus you'll have a kitchen where you can prepare meals. Look into bed and breakfasts or inns, but do your homework; they're sometimes just as expensive.

Pack meals. Do you have to eat out for every meal on vacation? You'd be amazed how much you can save if you pack meals and snacks – and you can make it healthier than most of what you would find on the road. Don't buy food at gas stations, they're overpriced. Use the Internet to research restaurants at your destination before you go. When you arrive, check with the hotel's front desk or concierge about coupons or 2-for-1 deals at local restaurants.

When your finances are tight, it may seem impossible to take a vacation. Make the call to Credit Counselors, where our experienced debt management professionals can help you develop a household budget and draw up a plan for debt reduction. You'll be surprised how quickly you can get your expenses under control and begin planning for a family vacation.
